Y1 classes are based in spacious, colorful classrooms around one side of the shady activities courtyard. Teachers use this area as an extension of the classrooms and plan a range of courtyard activities using the art and craft facilities, sand, water, role-play and other action-learning opportunities. An experienced teacher is responsible for each Year 1 class and is supported by a full-time teaching assistant. Parents are encouraged to take an active part in their children's learning.
All puplis have access to the school field, playgrounds and adventure play areas which challenge and develop their gross motor skills.
Teaching and learning is planned according to the National Curriculum for England and is supported by a range of high quality books and resources ordered from the UK . Pupils learn to read and write using the ‘Jolly Phonics’ scheme. They develop their speaking, listening, writing and reading skills by following the UK Literacy Framework. The love of reading and sharing books with peers and adults begins here and lasts a lifetime. They also follow the Mathematics Framework and use British Science schemes. History, Geography and cross-curricular topics which foster knowledge and understanding of the world are all brought alive through practical hands-on experience and regular field trips. Specialist teachers teach Arabic, PE, ICT and Music.
Through careful planning and organisation of the learning environment Year 1 teachers and assistants ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed academically and socially. Self-esteem and confidence are nurtured so that children become motivated and active learners. Through the introduction of the ‘Golden Rules’ a caring community is created where pupils learn to care for themselves, others and the school environment. This is a significant time for our pupils since the foundations are being laid upon which the rest of their education will build.
